The inaugral meeting of the Joomla User Group Suffolk was today hailed a success by organisers Ruth Cheesley and Matt Meyrick, who hosted the first meeting of the User Group in Ipswich. The Brewery Tap kindly hosted the first meeting, which was attended by six Joomla! users, with varying levels of knowledge and experience.

After a brief welcoming and introduction, the group dicussed what the aims of the JUG's are, and how the Suffolk group aims to address these. All in attendance agreed that one of the most important aims is to share information and knowledge, as well as networking with other like-minded individuals.

A presentation was given by Ruth Cheesly on the use of Search Engine Friendly URL's, including how to set up Joomla! to use SEF URL's and components which are available to assist you with this. Artio kindly sponsored this presentation, and a free license was provided. After a draw made by the Bar Manager, Chris from Teech.org was confirmed as the lucky winner - your code will be sent via email this evening.

Various discussions on what we wanted to provide to our members at meetings were had, with the following topics suggested:

  • Migrating from 1.0.x to 1.5.x
  • Security on Joomla! sites
  • Template overrides

It was also suggested that some time is set aside at the end of the session for members to demonstrate sites which they have recently completed or are currently involved with - this was agreed as a good idea, requiring internet access at venues if possible.

We look forward to seeing more members at the next meeting which will be in Felixstowe, hopefully at The Cork (on the seafront) - TBC.
