How to redirect my site to domainname.com/content?
Can you turn off "Search engine friendly" option and see if that resolves the problem?
If not, the .htaccess file is in the root of the Joomla installation. You need to download it and then you can alter it and ftp it back.
Any probs post back here and I will see if I can help. |

Is it a new Joomla install and what O/S are you running it on?
I'm no expert but 2 things that I would check..
1 - You need to change something in the .htaccess file
2 - A plugin for redirecting or search engine friendly names isnt configured properly.

Hullo From Dave Waters
I was introduced to Joomla! quite by chance when I offered to take over content management of a club website; I'd never heard of it before, and at first I wondered what I'd let myself in for!
My previous (limited) experience of website design and management was with HTML scripting, MS Frontpage and uploading content with FTP, so this was new daparture for me.
However, I got to grips with the basics fairly quickly with the aid of the help topics on the Joomla! site, and now I feel pretty much at home with Joomla!
The next step is to upgrade the club's Joomla version from 1.0.12 to 1.5 (or 1.6 if I wait a while), if I can summon up the courage to do it! The question is, is the upgrade worth the time and trouble if the website is working well at present?
I'm afraid I'm very unlikely to go to meetings, living to the west of Colchester as I do, but I hope JUGS will be interesting and useful. |

JANUARY meeting - when/where?
Hi all,
We need to get planning events for the new year, and we would like your feedback on when/where you would like to have meetings.
Any suggestions? Lowestoft is on the list for the next meeting courtesy of Blue Lobster IT but after that we're up for negotiation!

It will likely be related to the ItemID.
If you look at the un-sef'd version of a URL you'll notice an ItemID, when you publish a module to a menu it links the module appearing with that ItemID.
I suspect that in some places you're linking to the page you expect to have the module show, without the ItemID being present in the URL, so it won't show.
A starting place at least!

I have "latest news" module published to only show on the Front Page but some of my other pages show it but some do not.
Any ideas why? |

Hi from Lee Wilson
So nice to see a community of Joomla lovers in the local area. I myself am based in Ipswich.
I am the owner of a web design company called Blend: http://www.blend.uk.com.
We use various open source platforms on a day to day basis, perhaps the most used one being Joomla.
I myself have used Joomla since it began and Mambo before that, so I suppose when it comes to choosing a CMS for a project, I tend to have a soft spot for the one I am most familiar with.
The best thing to happen to Joomla of late, for me personally, is template overrides, which allow me to have full control over the frontend output of 3rd party extensions, so no more messy 3rd party code breaking validation.
Anyway, I hope to participate more in this little community over the new 12 months, I'm looking forward to meeting like minded people here.

File ownership and group membership for files
Following on from
http://docs.joomla.org/Should_PHP_run_as_a_CGI_script_or_as_an_Apache_module%3F
I have run a PHP script containing the line:
"echo "Username: ". get_current_user () ." ( UiD: ". getmyuid() .", GiD: ". getmygid() ." )";"
This returns the user and group ID of the FTP user which owns all the files.
Despite this, and the FTP user having write permission to all the directories and files, Help->SystemInfo->DirectoryPermissions still shows the directories as 'unwriteable'.
If I change the permissions to allow 'other' write then they show as writeable.
I can upload files using the FTP user.
So is this Joomla mis-reading the permissions?
Or is there something in 1.5.14 that is changing the user/group Joomla is running under?
I have so far only run a stand alone diagnostic PHP script - I haven't attempted to change/add a PHP script inside Joomla. |

File ownership and group membership for files
Hi,
I am just looking at a new Joomla site and having permissions problems.
Looking in Help->SystenInfo->DirectoryPermissions everything is set as 'Unwriteable'.
Using the server's web based admin tool I can see that file owner is 'fred' (not his real name) and group membership is also 'fred'.
Given this, it doesn't really surprise me that Joomla_within_Apache can't write to these directories unless the 'all users' permissions are set to 'write'.
However this is insecure.
Should all the files have group membership of e.g. www-data (which is the group for Apache on my default LAMP install under Ubuntu) to allow group permissions to be used, or is there a configuration option which tells Apache/Joomla which user to run as when accessing the files system containing all the Joomla data and configuration files?
The only user ID and password I could find was for the 'ftp' access.
TIA

Extensions upload
Ruth,
thanks for the clarification on the role of 'ftp' - this explains a lot about the configuration and the possible problems with the behaviour.
We are currently moving between hosts so hopefully this will not be a problem on the new host.
On the problem host, all the directory permissions were 'green' but we were having other permissions problems at the file level.
Noted that the 'ftp' layer is more likely to be required under Linux - this also seems to provide an extra level of security.
Cheers

Extensions upload
Hi all,
You don't have to use the FTP layer if you're on a Windows host - on Linux you do, however. Personally I always set it up during installation and have it autofind the path (which checks that the credentials are OK)
Have you tried going to Help>System Info and clicking on Directory Permissions (wasn't clear if they were all green).
I think you're maybe a little confuzzled as to what the FTP layer does. It allows Joomla! to move files around on the server and ensures that it has permissions to do so. I believe it's all to do with ownership of the files and some such, which is why Linux has a requirement for the FTP layer and windows does not always.
The extension installation does indeed take a file from your PC and upload it to the server, unpack it, install it and put the files in the relevant locations, however it sounds like yours is not working.
Rather than fiddling about with Global Config, go direct to your configuration.php file and check out the credentials there. From what you pasted it seems your FTP is set up using public_html as its root - is your Joomla! installation here, or in a sub folder?
Check that the username and password are correct. I believe that 127.0.0.1 is correct for the host, as it should be connecting to the same server on which the Joomla! installation resides (local host) and indeed this is entered when I checked my own sites.
The link which Chris posted should get you going.
Hope you manage to resolve it!

Extensions upload
I am having a similar problem (using the same site as Trevor) and one thing I can't find in an obvious place is a tool to configure FTP.
*Edit - O.K., found it in the 'Global Configuration->Server' page. *
The error message is attached.
I also attach a screen dump of the 'ftp' configuration area from the 'System Information' area of the 'help' menu.
As far as I can see the 'ftp' host is set to 'localhost', which doesn't seem right if this is the configuration option used to upload extensions.
I did, however, expect the Joomla host to pull the files from my PC - I didn't expect to have to 'push' them via 'ftp'.
I tried to use the third part URL to get the extension loaded but that is not currently working - it looks as though it needs the URL of the target file and I have only managed to navigate as far as the URL inside the 'download' button.
As far as I can tell all directories listed in the System Information are writeable (however, the 'ftp' configuration may be pointing at an incorrect area if it has not been set up correctly).
Whatever, it isn't working and the Joomla Help doesn't tell you how to set up 'ftp'.
Any suggestions welcome.
David
P.S. the edit function sucks - lost all my paragraph breaks. |
